2008 BIANTE Touring Car Masters,
BULLAS AND EAST GO BACK TO BACK
Press Release – 8 September 2008.
Round Five, Muscle Car Masters Eastern Creek Raceway, Eastern Creek, NSW September. 6-7.
Gavin Bullas and Greg East both backed up their winning performances at Winton Motor Raceway to also eclipse their respective divisions in Round Five of the BIANTE Touring Car Masters Series at Eastern Creek Raceway this weekend.
In front of a packed house on Father’s Day, Bullas stormed his Raincity Industries Mustang and East his Ron Poysner sponsored HQ to their wins on a weekend where the BIANTE Touring Car Masters put their best foot forward in a wonderful event known as the Muscle Car Masters.
Contrasting weather conditions aside, the standard of competition was truly memorable over the two days.
RACE ONE
Eddie Abelnica broke a long win drought by scoring victory having a significant tyre advantage in Race One, driving the 302ci powered Boss Mustang when he led home Brett Youlden in the Graham Alexander owned HQ Holden in second and fellow HQ hero and giant killing Division 2 winner, Greg East for third.
John Bowe moved the Sunliner RV Chev Camaro from a drive through penalty status (start line infringement) to an eventual fourth in unpleasant conditions for all concerned, as the rain poured down on the Eastern Creek layout.
Bowe was trailed by Gavin Bullas in the Raincity Industries Fastback Mustang from BIANTE Touring Car Masters debutant Charlie O’Brien, in the Chris Stillwell owned 68 Mustang and Trevor Talbot in the Dukes Body Works XU1 Torana.
Alastair Maclean brought the Top Shelf Motor Company Chev Camaro home in eighth ahead of the vastly improved Portland plumber Mick Wilson in his Charger RT, Phil Brock in the Raincity Racing GT Falcon, Greg Waddington in the Waddington Engines HQ, Chris Stillwell in the potent Ford Escort, Drew Marget in the Marget Engineering Mustang and Mike Erwin in the Phil Morris owned Falcon.
Defending champion Steve Mason struggled home in 15th due to wet weather tyre issues ahead of Steve Markarios, Nigel Benson, Cameron Tilley, Rory O’Neill, second-generation racer Elton Trelor and Cameron Mason in the Datsun 1600.
Brad Tilley was a surprise non-start in the GT Falcon, again due to wet tyre supply issues.
RACE TWO
Race Two (the first event for the fifth round on the Sunday, in contrasting bright sunlight) was one of the races of the season so far with a miniscule 0.13s margin separating winner Gavin Bullas and John Bowe at the fall of the chequered flag. The enormous crowd on hand really appreciating the constant bids for supremacy between the pair over the course of the 10-lap event.
Fans were spoilt for choice in terms of on track battles to watch though with Eddie Abelnica, Steve Mason and Brad Tilley engaging in a thrilling dogfight that lasted until the final 50 metres to decide third place. Abelnica held sway in the Melbourne’s Cheapest Cars Boss Mustang but Steve Mason’s play for the final podium position was a far better reflection of the Novocastrian’s ability in dry conditions and on the appropriate rubber.
The third multiple car battle came in the form of Trevor Talbot, Mick Wilson and Greg Waddington with the XU1 of Talbot eventually shooting past Wilson to snare 9th with the flag in sight. Wilson was 10th in the Charger, Waddington 11th in the HQ.
Greg East again started strongly, jumping from the second row of the grid to make an initial bid for the lead before slipping back several positions to an eventual 12th in the Hype Energy Drinks HQ after a minor off track excursion. Brett Youlden was again stout in the Alexander Holden coming home in seventh, just behind Drew Marget in the Mustang.
Phil Brock came home in 13th ahead of Nigel Benson, Rory O’Neill, Steve Makarios, Mike Erwin, Michael Acheson debuting mid event in the Chrysler Charger E55, Cameron Mason and Elton Treloar in 20th.
RACE THREE
Gavin Bullas had it pretty well all his own way in the final race of the BIANTE Touring Car Masters fifth round with a no fuss victory in the 10 lap affair over the defending BTCM champion Steve Mason in second and Drew Marget in third. John Bowe started alongside Bullas on the front row, but for the second time this weekend was deemed by officials to have infringed on the start and was given a drive though penalty in the Wilson Security / Westrac CAT Chev Camaro.
Bowe was making another of his barnstorming runs from almost the back of the pack when – to rub salt into the wound – his #12 machine crawled to a halt at the top of the main straight with only a couple of laps to travel. He had worked his way to fourth at the time.
Brad Tilley started the race from pit lane but came home fast to score fourth place behind Tilley ahead of Brett Youlden (who did a solid job all weekend in the Graham Alexander Holden), Charlie O’Brien in the Stillwell Mustang in 6th, Alastair MacLean (a vast improvement for him in the final event) in the Top Shelf Auto Company Chev Camaro in 7th and the winner of the Division 2 category Greg East in the Hype Energy Drinks HQ.
Mick Wilson placed 9th in the Chrysler Charger RT ahead of Trevor Talbot, Mike Erwin, Nigel Benson, Rory O’Neill, Greg Waddington, Cameron Mason, Steve Makarios and Michael Acheson.
