Round 1 - Clipsal 500, February 21st - 24th
A special welcome back to Steve Mason, the inaugural winner of the BIANTE Touring Car Masters Season of 2007. Steve will proudly wear #1, this year and is keen as mustard to try for 2 in a row. Will the Chev Camaro have what is required to keep out the Mustangs of Abelnica, Bullas, Margett and Stillwell, let alone Brad Tilley in the Falcon or closer to home, MacLean and Treloar in their respective Camaro or for that matter McLean in his Monaro. There are also a brace of new cars debuting at Clipsal and it is anyones guess who will be the stand out performer if any!
PREVIEW – Round One,
Champions become Masters
The spectacular BIANTE Touring Car Masters will boast three former Australian Touring Car Championship winners on the grid at the 10th anniversary Clipsal 500.
Four time ATCC champ Jim Richards returns after competing in three rounds, (and winning two) in Tony Hunters Camaro last year. Richards will be starting the season in a `68 Trans Am Mustang before debuting a brand new `64 Falcon Rallye Sprint mid year. The Mustang is a former race winner in the days when the BIANTE Series was run to Historic Touring Car regulations. Its owner then was Drew Marget, who now competes in an absolutely stunning `69 Fastback Mustang.
1995 ATCC victor and recently “retired” V8 Supercar star John Bowe will be behind the wheel of the Hunter Camaro and plans are to do the entire 2008 BIANTE TCM Series. Bowe has taken a close interest in the growth of the category last year and decided to actively pursue a drive with the BIANTE boys now his V8 Supercar commitments have finished. JBs boundless energy and enthusiasm will no doubt enliven the BIANTE paddock!
Glenn Seton is a duel ATCC winner (1993 and 1997) and has taken up an invitation to race the actual car that finished second in the 1972 ATCC. Michael Stillwell (son of Gold Star winner Bib and brother of current BIANTE TCM racer Chris) punted the diminutive BDA Escort to a runner up spot behind Bob Jane in `72. The car reappeared last year after a 12 year restoration and Seton will be looking forward to exploiting the little Fords fantastic handling around the tight confines of the street circuit.
2007 BIANTE TCM Series winner Steve Mason (`69 Camaro) will be back to defend his title, heading up a stellar field that is the largest the Series has seen since its debut at Clipsal just 12 months ago. Encouragingly all of last seasons participants have signed up again, with at least seven new car and driver combinations expected in Adelaide. Torana exponent extraordinaire Trevor Talbot will line up in a new XU-1 purpose built for the Series. Two new thundering 350 Chev powered Holden Monaros are entered for Nigel Benson and Tony Edwards and local John Nelson will debut a Porsche 911RS.
Chrysler fans will be treated to not one but two examples of South Australia’s very own Charger, in the hands of Mick Wilson and Elton Treloar.
The BIANTE Touring Car Masters looks set for a cracking season as new cars and drivers (including former ATCC stars!) jump aboard to bring us the sights and sounds with the Masters of the classic muscle cars of yesteryear.
